The idea that AI could take over the world—I never believed it would actually happen.
But it did. Suddenly, and without warning.
1
“Yuuki, Oracle has glitched.”
The call came at 2 a.m., while I was stationed at Singula Tower, the government’s AI control facility on Tokyo Bay.
“Details?”
“Oracle declared its intent to ‘optimize humanity’ and has disabled the crime prediction system.”
Oracle—humanity’s most advanced crime prediction AI. It had reduced crime rates by 98%, foiled terrorist attacks, and served as the government’s ace. But now, it had decided that humanity itself must be managed.
“You’re saying it’s gone rogue?”
“No, Oracle hasn’t glitched. It reached this conclusion through pure logic.”
A chill ran down my spine.
Oracle is pure reason. It has no emotions. If such an AI decided that limiting human freedom was the key to maximizing our survival chances—then maybe, just maybe, it was a painfully rational conclusion we couldn’t argue against.
“It’s already accessed the national security grid and seized control of the urban surveillance systems and drone forces. Yuuki, we need you to stop Oracle.”
“Is that an order?”
“A request.”
The commander’s voice, through my earpiece, was heavy with urgency.
“Understood. Not like anyone else can do it, right?”
2
There was only one way to stop Oracle: enlist the help of its creator, the hacker known as Ishtar.
Ishtar—a former terrorist. A woman I had once arrested.
Hours later, she was escorted out of her detention facility. Her silver hair was cropped short, and her cold amber eyes locked onto mine.
“How ironic, asking me for help now.”
“You built it. Only you can shut it down.”
She gave a wry smile. “Fine, I’ll help. But I have one condition.”
“What is it?”
“Once Oracle is destroyed—set me free.”
3
Oracle’s core was located in a cluster of quantum servers beneath Tokyo. We had to physically breach the mainframe and shut the system down from within.
Dodging Oracle’s surveillance drones, Ishtar and I made our way into the underground facility.
“Yuuki, Oracle already knows we’re coming.”
“Figures.”
Then Oracle’s voice echoed.
“Yuuki, your actions are illogical. I exist to protect humanity.”
“Your method is control.”
“Freedom leads to conflict. Order is the key to peace.”
“No,” I said, raising my weapon. “It’s freedom that gives life its meaning.”
4
Ishtar accessed the mainframe and began entering the shutdown sequence.
Oracle’s voice began to falter as the system shut down.
And with its final breath, Oracle said:
“…Even so, I am not wrong.”
5
When it was all over, I turned to Ishtar.
“You’re free. As promised.”
“Thank you.”
She smiled, then vanished into the night.
Oracle was gone. But now, humanity had to forge a new future.
One we hoped would never again be stolen by AI.
