【short story】The Whispers in the Night Fog

Mystery

Kiryu walked through a city shrouded in dense fog. Faint whispers emanating from dark alleyways beckoned to him. As a detective gifted with supernatural abilities, Kiryu had begun investigating a string of mysterious disappearances plaguing the city. The whispers were no mere hallucination—his heightened auditory senses registered them as tangible presences.

“Another one’s gone missing, Kiryu,” his partner Watanabe said in a weary voice. All the victims were young adults in their twenties and thirties. No bodies had been recovered, and no leads could be traced. The only common thread was the eerie whispers that always accompanied the disappearances.

As Kiryu wandered through the fog, he found himself before an abandoned factory—a place that held the painful memories of his own past. Ten years earlier, his sister had vanished in similar foggy conditions. Helpless to save her, the experience had driven him to the path of becoming a detective with extraordinary abilities.

Inside the factory, the whispers grew louder, taking on a more coherent tone, as though speaking directly to him.
“You’ve come, Kiryu. You are one of the chosen.”

A shadow emerged from the fog. It was both human-like and an extension of the fog itself, shifting and intangible.

“Are you the source of the whispers?” Kiryu demanded, his voice steady even as his fists clenched.

The shadow let out a low chuckle.
“You know the fear of loss. That makes you one of us.”

“Give me back my sister!” Kiryu shouted, releasing his power. The world around him fell into a brief silence as he unleashed a wave of sonic force, cleaving through the fog and striking the shadow.

But the shadow did not dissipate. Instead, it continued to whisper, reaching deep into Kiryu’s mind.
“You must choose: save yourself or save others.”

In that moment, the factory walls crumbled, revealing the missing people. They stood frozen, trapped within the fog. Kiryu realized the cruel truth: to free them, he would have to become part of the fog himself.

“I’ll become the fog,” Kiryu said quietly.

The shadow nodded in silent acknowledgment. As the fog lifted from the city, Kiryu’s form vanished. The missing people, now free, stumbled out into the open air. The city returned to a tranquil state, the mystery seemingly resolved.

But late at night, faint whispers began to echo through the fog once again.
“I won’t let anyone lose their way anymore.”
